Defining the Genre: Taxi Driver (1976) - dir. Martin Scorsese
Crime films, well… successful crime films, absolutely can not have unnecessary violence.
And violence so rarely serves a better purpose than in the slow, plodding Taxi Driver, written by Paul Schrader. Though the fall and corruption of Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is inevitable from the start, the film’s violent finale requires a calculated escalation.
